The Durango Melodrama
This season,the Durango Melodrama features George M Cohan’s classsic “The Tavern” – described as a brilliant piece of slightly off-center Americana. Premiering on Broadway in 1920, the play is about a vagabond who takes shelter from a howling storm only to become a suspect in a mystery that eventually unfolds to involve all of the hotel’s guests and staff. Aptly, the show takes place in a lonely tavern on a wild stormy night where a woman, the State Governor and his family (who have been held up a short distance away), and a mysterious vagabond gather for shelter.
Several persons are suspected of the crime and the mysterious vagabond takes infinite delight in observing developments as they take place about him. When suspense reaches an almost unbearable climax, the vagabond is at last located by the keepers of a nearby Sanatorium and it is learned that he, a madman, has been responsible for the vastly amusing and complicated series of misunderstandings.

The History of The "Hank"
A theatre this old has history as equally entertaining as the shows that continue to appear season after season. In 1961, next to the Strater Hotel was a dusty old car garage that was screaming for a transformation. The vision was of burgundy and rose and the idea was to entertain locals and tourist for years to come. The unique and attractive theatre opened its doors on June 23rd, 1962 with rave reviews earning national acclaims for the Four Corners area. TIME Magazine raved that the theatre was one of the top theatres during its premier summer season.
The Henry Strater Theatre’s debut show was the off-Broadway and Las Vegas hit "Forever Plaid." The show sold out opening night and continued to bring in sold out crowds to cheer on the fun and enthusiastic performers. In 2009, The Hank also brought in the Broadway classic "Dames at Sea," which enjoyed a summer of sold-out, family friendly entertainment. The theatre plans to continue to bring in different varieties of world renowned shows including comedy, bands, musicals, drama, magic and mystery, cabaret, and more!
